From the Book of the Dead chapter 175
pg. 9
The text is introduced as a spell for someone not to die a second time. It is to be spoken by Ani, the triumphant.
Atum talks about how humans have done evil, fought, slaughtered, and done injustice. Thoth explains that human lifespans have been shortened on account of their evil. Thoth’s shortening of the human lifespan is similar to that found in the Noah narrative, where God likewise shortens human life (at least, according to the most popular interpretations) because of their perpetual evil inclination.
Words spoken by Osiris Ani are provided, asking about being sent to the silent desert land [the underworld].
Atum explains that this netherworld has no water, air, sexual pleasure, bread or bear. Yet, it is a blessed place, and peace is provided in place of all of these. Similarly, the Hebrew Bible assumes that spiritual beings cannot eat physical food, and Jesus claims that there will be no marriage in the resurrection.
The deceased Osiris asks how he is to live away from Atum.
Atum responds that Horus will rule the land.
The deceased Osiris asks how long he will live.
Atum explains that he will live for millions of years.
